2022 FIFA World Cup: Japan 2-Germany 1

Japan have caused another huge upset at the World Cup, as a thrilling comeback saw them stun Germany 2-1 in their Group E opener.

Ilkay Gundogan grabbed the lead for the Germans from the spot in the 33rd minute. His first World Cup goal, seemed to tee up a routine win for Germany, but the Samurai Blue made a string of changes in the second half, and ultimately turned the game around.

Ritsu Doan fired the ball into an empty net to equalize with 15 minutes left on the clock, and Takuma Asano smashed the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle, shortly after, to earn Japan a memorable victory in Qatar.

The loss for Germany is the secod opening defeat they have suffered at a World Cup. They will face Spain in their second outing, as they will be looking to get their campaign back on track.
