The 2022 World Cup is in full swing, with the hosts Qatar kicking it off with a dismal 2-0 defeat to Group A rivals Ecuador.
A lavish opening ceremony in which Qatar welcomed the world was followed by a tepid display as the South Americans ran riot in a dominant first half. The Ecuadorians had a 3rd minute goal ruled out due to a VAR intervention.
They kept banging on the door and deservedly went ahead by the quarter-hour mark, when Ener Valencia confidentally converted a spot-kick.
The former West Ham striker doubled his side's lead just after the half-hour as he glanced a header into the far corner to win the game for his side. As for Qatar it was a record-breaking start. They became the first hosts to lose their opening game of the tournament.
