West Russia sanctions
A senior Russian security official says western sanctions against his country over the Ukraine conflict will have no effect on Moscow. It’s foolish to believe that the measures will have any impact, says Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council. He says the bans will only unite his country. Medvedev also lashed out at the US, saying it’s no longer the master of the world. He stressed that the unipolar world has come to an end. The US, Europe, along several other countries like Canada have imposed sanctions on Russia to force it to end its military operation in Ukraine. Some of the sanctions have targeted businessmen close to President Vladimir Putin. Russia, however, has affirmed that it will continue the operation until it reaches its goal of Ukraine’s demilitarization.
US-North Korea tensions
North Korea says it is prepared for a long confrontation with what it calls "US imperialism", as it confirms testing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, who directly oversaw the test, said the missile was key to preventing nuclear war. He said Pyongyang is determined to strengthen a powerful nuclear deterrent. North Korean media say the newly-launched missile is a new type of ICBM, which is the biggest the country has ever tested. South Korea, Japan, and the US have condemned it. The US has imposed new sanctions on North Korea. It has also imposed sanctions on a number of Russian individuals and entities, accusing them of providing sensitive items to North Korea's missile program.
France protests
French unions have held nationwide protests to voice their anger at President Emmanuel Macron's pledge to raise the retirement age if re-elected. On top of the demonstrations, an “unlimited” transport strike has also been called in Paris.
