Sanctions removal talks
The Iranian president says any Vienna deal must entail the removal of anti-Iran sanctions and credible guarantees. This as intensive talks are underway in the Austrian capital aimed at reviving the 2015 agreement. Ebrahim Raeisi made the remark in a phone call with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron. He said Iran continues the negotiations with seriousness and has offered constructive proposals. The president noted that Tehran has assessed the proposals put forward by the other sides based on their conformity with the interests of the Iranian nation. Macron also spoke of good progress in the talks expressing hope that the negotiations will yield results soon.
US-Russia tensions
Russia says it has test fired cruise, hypersonic and nuclear-capable ballistic missiles as part of planned exercises.The Kremlin says all the missiles have achieved their performance objectives. The drills included Tu 95 bombers and submarines and were part of a regular training process. Russia’s chief of general staff says the main objective of the exercises is to perfect the performance of the country’s strategic offensive forces in delivering a guaranteed strike against the enemy. Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw the exercises alongside the president of neighboring Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, from the Kremlin situation room. The drills follow a huge series of maneuvers by Russian armed forces in the past four months that have included a build-up of troops to the north, east and south of Ukraine.
East Ukraine evacuation
Pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine are continuing to evacuate residents of Donetsk and surrounding areas as several buses were seen leaving for Russia. The situation escalated a few days ago when both sides accused each other of violating a 2015 ceasefire. Russia has expressed concerns over the renewed clashes, describing the situation as potentially very dangerous. Moscow also denies Western accusations that it is planning an invasion of Ukraine. A US official says more than 40 percent of Russian forces on the Ukraine border are in an attack position and Moscow has begun a campaign of destabilization.
