South Korean activists have protested the government’s abusive migrant detention system. They supported the claims of Mr. M, a Moroccan man abused and allegedly tortured by immigration officials. The rally has also marked the 15th anniversary of a fire at a detention center that claimed the lives of 10 migrants. Mr. M and activists call for investigation, compensation, punishment, and reform.
Mr. M spent 11 months in detention in South Korea. He says he asked for medicine, and complained, and was bound and placed in solitary confinement, seen in the CCTV.
The rally also marks 15 years since a fire tore through a detention facility, while guards kept the migrants locked up, as 10 people died.
In addition to the problematic conditions suffered by so-called illegal migrants in South Korea, the country has a spotty record when it comes to refugees, accepting only a small percentage of what many view are legitimate claimants each year.
Activists say detainees are held an average of three months, with limited visitations and only 30 minutes of fresh air per day. They want reforms, and an end to arbitrary detention.
