Iran revolution anniversary

Forty-three years since the Islamic Revolution, Iran is celebrating the anniversary of a popular uprising that toppled a Western-backed monarch. The celebrations, known as the Ten-Day Dawn, start with ceremonies that mark the return to Iran of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Revolution, after 15 years in exile. Millions of Iranians welcomed the charismatic leader in Tehran on February 1, 1979. Imam Khomeini’s arrival intensified months of protests against the Pahlavi regime. Ten days later, the rallies culminated in the downfall of the regime, bringing down the curtain on more than two millennia of monarchy in Iran.

Tensions over Ukraine

Russia says it will not retreat in the face of US threats, as Moscow and the West remain locked in a standoff over Ukraine. Russia’s embassy in Washington has responded to recent US sanctions threats, saying it is not standing at attention and listening to those threats. The White House has said it is ready to impose sanctions on President Putin's inner circle, if Russia attacks Ukraine. The Russian embassy blames Washington for the ongoing tensions. The two countries’ top diplomats are set to speak over the phone later on Tuesday. The US and its allies are accusing Russia of planning an imminent invasion of Ukraine. Moscow says it has no plans to start a war, but is demanding binding guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO.

Anti-Israeli sentiment

Turkey and Israel have been holding negotiations over a possible natural gas pipeline project. It is not clear, however, whether the project will go ahead. Relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv soured after Israeli marines stormed a Gaza-bound flotilla in 2010, killing 10 Turkish activists on board.
