Two years on: UK government breaks Islamophobia definition promise

The British government has came under fire during a heated debate on Islamophobia at Westminster parliament after failing to adopt any definition of Islamophobia two years after promising to do so. With MPs and critics all condemning the lack of action amid rising Islamophobia across the UK.

In 2018, an all-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims, created their own definition of Islamophobia in 2018, describing it as a form of racism:

“Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness."

Regardless which political group makes the definition, grassroots British Muslim groups are concerned over what they see as an “establishment pushed” definition.

Some have already begun to adopt the definition. Including the opposition Labour Party, however, accusations of Islamophobia within Labour remain despite its implementation.

A lot of scepticism surrounds this definition with many fears that it will not serve the community effectively if at all but while MPs continue to procrastinate, Islamophobia remains a persistent threat.
