Senior Tory Geoffrey Cox has received more than £900,000 working as an advocate during one year, while the COVID pandemic was rushing through the UK, leaving hundreds of thousands jobless.
The former Attorney General has been raising money from three second jobs, including a lucrative position as “consultant global counsel” for international law firm of Withers LLP with an annual salary of £468,000.
In addition to his annual salary, records show that between April 2020 and July 2021, the former cabinet minister raised an additional amount of £327,375 from Withers for 344 hours of “legal services.”
The MP for Torridge and West Devon has not spoken in the parliament even for once for the past year and his last speech in the House of Commons goes back to January 2020, for which, he is being accused of neglecting his constituents and being “missing in action” ever since.
He has been working for a staggering 466 hours for various legal firms, including West London-based Fidlaw, raising a total amount of £904,000.
In spite of being sacked as Attorney General by Boris Johnson on February 13, he was handed a knighthood in the 2021 New Year Honors list.
Karin Smyth, MP for Bristol South said, “Geoffrey Cox is showing a complete lack of respect for his constituents and is making a mockery of his parliamentary responsibilities,” noting that “the people in Torridge and West Devon deserve better than a missing in action MP who is more concerned with bumping his salary than helping them recover from the pandemic.”
Torridge and West Devon showed more than 500 weekly cases of COVID-19 during the previous waves in recent months, which left the businesses hit by the pandemic on their knees.
