Every year on Imam Hussein's martyrdom anniversary, Shia Muslims in Iran and across the world take part in mass mourning processions for 10 days starting on the first day of the lunar month of Muharram.

For the second year now, the ceremonies have been largely limited because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Tehran city council says it has restricted this year's ceremonies to open air venues with smaller numbers of people.
