Possible oil spill looms in Sri Lanka ship disaster

Images show a partially-sunken container ship and debris on the beach, as international experts were deployed to Sri Lanka to deal with a possible oil spill after the ship loaded with chemicals and plastic burned offshore for almost two weeks.

Navy soldiers have been cleaning up tonnes of microplastic granules from the ship that have swamped an 80-kilometre (50-mile) stretch of beach which has been declared off limits for residents. Fishing in the area was also banned.
