Syrians head to polls to elect their new president for the next seven years. The election comes as the counter-terrorism operation in the Arab country nears an end with government forces winning back control of almost all regions from foreign-backed militants.
Ballot boxes opened at 7 am signaling the beginning of the process which allows citizens to choose one of the three presidential candidates as the states next president for the next seven years.
Over 12,000 electoral centers were set up. In Syria, more than 18 Million people are eligible to vote. Incumbent president Bashar al-Assad and Syria’s first lady Asma al-Assad cast their ballots in Duma, once a terrorist stronghold before the Syrian army liberated it in 2018.
Assad said Syrians’ rallies in support of the election is a good enough response to the statements made by Western countries that rejected the election process. Iran’s ambassador to Syria recommended the West to respect Syrians’ decision.
Syrian expatriates have already voted on the 20th of May across the world. Syrians outside government controlled territories will not be able to vote such as in SDF controlled, terrorist controlled and Turkish and US occupied parts of Syria.
So many countries have stood against Syria since 2011. They have tried to destroy the country by toppling its president forcibly and eliminating its army by supporting terrorist groups. But here they are today; Syrians are voting and expressing their right to independent decision-making, telling those states: “We decide our future.”
