Iran nuclear program

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has dismissed US and European concerns over his country's decision to enrich uranium to 60 percent purity, saying the Islamic Republic's nuclear program is peaceful. Rouhani reiterated that Tehran is not seeking to develop nuclear weapons. He said such accusations must address those that are keeping and stockpiling nukes for long. The Iranian president said the only option for the US and other signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal is to get back to full compliance with their commitments. He said after the verification of their measures, Iran would also return to compliance under the JCPOA. Rouhani also hailed the successful inauguration of the country’s major projects with breakthroughs in the production field, despite economic sanctions and the coronavirus pandemic.

US Afghanistan withdrawal

The Taliban say the United States is already in breach of its agreement with the group over the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan. In an exclusive interview with Press TV, the spokesman for the Taliban’s Political Office in Doha said Washington has failed to abide by its commitments under the 2020 peace deal with the group. Mohammed Naeem Wardak said the group’s priority is to expel foreign forces from Afghanistan. He noted that the Taliban will take part in peace negotiations once foreign troops have left the Afghan soil. The Taliban official called on the international community and the neighboring countries to help Afghanistan deal with its political problems.

US Russia showdown

Russia has summoned the US ambassador to Moscow over Washington’s latest sanctions on the country and expulsion of its diplomats. The Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman said a response to new US sanctions is inevitable. Maria Zakharova warned that Washington’s hostile steps intensify the confrontation between the two countries. This comes after the US announced economic sanctions against five Russian individuals and three entities and expelled 10 Russian diplomats. The Kremlin has warned to retaliate against any new "unfriendly moves" from Washington. The US has been accusing Russia of being behind a cyber attack on American companies and government offices last year. It also accuses the Russian president of directing efforts to hurt Biden’s candidacy during the 2020 presidential election. Russia has repeatedly rejected the allegations.
