Iranian vessel attacked

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman has confirmed an attack targeting an Iranian vessel in the Red Sea. Saeed Khatibzadeh says the attack was a clear violation of international law and sea regulations. Khatibzadeh condemned the attack, saying investigations are underway to find the perpetrators behind what he described as an act of sabotage. The spokesman said the explosion occurred on Tuesday morning near the Djibouti coast and caused minor damage with no casualties. He said the vessel was a civilian ship stationed there to secure the region against pirates.

Bahrain protest

Bahrainis have staged a demonstration to protest the death of a political prisoner. The demonstrators chanted slogans in solidarity with Abbas Malullah's family. Malullah died in prison due to medical negligence as well as harrowing, dangerous and inhumane conditions in prisons run by the Al Khalifah regime. This comes as Bahrain’s most prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Issa Ghassem had recently called for the release of political prisoners amid the coronavirus pandemic. Human rights organizations have already criticized Bahrain over the situation of its prisons. The facilities are said to be overcrowded and lacking proper sanitation.

Ethiopian dam dispute

At least 100 people have been killed in border clashes between Ethiopia's Afar and Somali regions. The clashes broke out on Friday and continued through Tuesday. Both sides deny having initiated the attacks and blame the other for the violence. The fighting has been the latest outbreak of violence ahead of national elections in June. Northern Ethiopia has witnessed fighting since November 2020 between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and leaders of Tigray, the northernmost region of the country. The UN has already warned of an alarming crisis in Tigray as border disputes continue.
