Taliban reject early elections proposal by President Ghani

The Taliban have rejected a proposal by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to hold elections later this year. This came after months of peace talks between the two warring sides made little progress.

Kabul’s offer to the Taliban is to hold an early election, most possibly in six months, to have a peaceful and legitimate transition of power in the county. The proposal also creates an opportunity for the Taliban to compete with other political players and gain legitimate political power.

Officials here say Ghani is going to offer this plan to the attendees of the conference in Turkey next month. In the eyes of top policymakers in Afghanistan, holding early elections is the only way to avoid another crisis.

Experts believe there might be different motives behind the Taliban’s rejection of Kabul’s early election offer including the fact that the group may think it can win the battle against Afghanistan’s central government by fighting.

Based on the US-Taliban peace deal that was signed last year, the US forces should leave Afghanistan on May 1. However, US officials have said that they will review the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan.

In response, the Taliban may increase their attacks and bombings across the country.

In such circumstances, what the people of Afghanistan want is a true and honest act by all players in order to respect the will of the nation that is bringing peace and stability to the country after decades of bloody war.
