Tehran to Washington: I won’t talk to you before you remove your illegal sanctions.

This is according to an Iranian security source, which talked to Press TV on condition of anonymity.

Iran’s hardened tone toward the US came after what it called misinterpretations of remarks made by President Hassan Rouhani last week when he said if the US took steps toward reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran would reciprocate action with action; something which was interpreted by western leaders as a plan for a step-by-step round of talks with the US.

But the Iranian foreign ministry put the final word on it; such interpretations are wrong and there’s no such plan.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent tweet sparked further speculations about possible talks between Tehran and Washington. Zarif said that Tehran would soon present what he called a constructive plan of action through proper diplomatic channels.

I asked the Iranian foreign ministry’s spokesman about what Zarif meant by his tweet.

Iran has recently accelerated the stepwise suspension of its commitments to the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA.
The latest step was to halt the International Atomic Energy Agency’s extra inspection and snap monitoring of Iranian nuclear facilities, which was enshrined in the pact.

This as, Tehran and Washington have since Biden took office been locked in a standoff over who should take the first step toward reviving the deal.

Iran says it was the US that left the pact during the Trump administration and reinstated sanctions against Iran, and it should act first.

The bottom line is Iran will not talk about the JCPOA until the US lifts all sanctions, period.

This means the ball is in the US court now, but at the same time, Tehran says the clock is ticking on the Biden administration, and further dilly dallying could endanger the fate of the precarious deal.
