Half of Americans believe the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump, according to a new poll.
Fifty percent of those taking part in a Marist poll released Monday said Trump should be found guilty for his role in stoking the Jan. 6 breach of the US Capitol, which left five people dead.
Forty-one percent of respondents said Trump should be acquitted.
Trump is being impeached for a second time, this time for incitement of insurrection, in the wake of his supporters’ attempt to overturn the election results in his favor by storming the Congress, where the lawmakers were holding a session to certify the victory of President Joe Biden.
Most Republican senators have dismissed Trump’s second impeachment trial, making it highly unlikely for the upper chamber of Congress to vote to convict.
Contesting President Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election is also causing trouble for other GOP figures such as Missouri Senator Josh Hawley.
"If you are watching this from somewhere else other than Missouri, we ask you to contact your senator and ask them to have him expelled from the Senate immediately," the Rev. Cassandra Gould of Missouri Faith Voices said during a press conference last week. "Missouri can't afford this. Black people can't afford this. My grandchildren can't afford this."
Hawley was outspoken in contesting the certification of Biden's Electoral College victory but changed his tone last week.
“I never said that the goal was to overturn the election. That was never the point and it was never possible," he said. “What we need to have are elections that are fair, free and open, and I think Congress needs to do its job and look into election irregularities.
Trump has named a new team of lawyers to defend him during his second impeachment while effectively escaping lawsuits against him in US courts.
