Spain's military was deployed on Saturday to help dozens of drivers stuck on motorways outside Madrid after record snowfall through the night.
Spain was on high alert Friday as record levels of snow disrupted road, rail, sea and air traffic, while authorities warned that worse weather is to come over the weekend.
The national AEMET weather agency had forecasted that the Spanish capital and other parts of the country's central regions would have more than 24 hours of continuous snowfall as Storm Filomena moved north from the Straits of Gibraltar.
The agency said up to 20 centimetres (nearly 8 inches) of snow could accumulate in large parts of Spain and the build-up could reach up to 50 centimetres in mountainous areas.
The storm was expected to weaken and move northeast by Sunday, the agency said.
