Liverpool Mayor, Joe Anderson, says he is co-operating with police following his arrest on allegations of bribery and witness intimidation.
Following his release on bail, Anderson issued the following statement: “I was arrested as part of Operation Aloft on Friday 4 December, and interviewed for six hours. I co-operated fully with Merseyside Police and will continue to be co-operative in their continuing enquiries”.
Anderson was arrested with four other men as part of a year-long police investigation into the awarding of building contracts in Liverpool.
Immediately after his arrest, the Labor Party suspended Anderson pending the outcome of the case.
According to Merseyside Police, Anderson and the four other men have been released pending further enquiries as part of Operation Aloft, which is focused on a number of property developers in Liverpool.
As part of his statement, Anderson claims he “supports” Labor’s decision to “apply an administrative suspension” while the investigation continues.
According to Sky News, overall 11 people have been arrested as part of the long-running fraud inquiry.
Anderson’s arrest is a major embarrassment for the Labor Party in the north of England, especially as it is the first corruption case involving the mayor of a major city for many years.
Anderson joined the Labor Party in 1980 and was elected Liverpool Mayor in 2012 after serving in the city’s council since 1998.
