Artist completes 6,000-piece Rubik’s Cube mosaic in 16 hours

A Rubik’s Cube artist has created a 6,000-piece mosaic in under 16 hours, the largest Rubik’s Cube mosaic ever made in this time.

Giovanni Contardi, 26, created the special artwork to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the logic puzzle and the finals of the Red Bull Rubik's Cube World Cup, both on Saturday, November 7.

Contardi, whose work usually uses 500 to 700 cubes, took 15 hours 49 minutes and 32 seconds to complete the 6,111 piece artwork - beating his 24-hour target.

The mosaic, made using the artist's own cubes, measures 5.55 metres by 3.66 metres and depicts the Greed God Atlas holding a giant Rubik's Cube.

The Italian artist typically creates portraits. For his mosaic of Atlas, he solved each Cube in approximately 7 seconds.

Upon completing the mosaic, Contardi said, "The hardest part was definitely staying focused for this whole time and of course enduring the pain on my legs, but I'm happy to be done."

On the puzzle's 40th anniversary on November 7, international speedcubers will compete at the third Red Bull Rubik's Cube World Cup Finals, taking place online. Last year's championship took place in Moscow, Russia and was won by Max Park from America, who beat two-time world champion Australia's Feliks Zemdegs.

The Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, who then called it the "Magic Cube". In 1980, the Ideal Toy Company changed its name and began to distribute the newly renamed Rubik's Cube that is solved around the world today.
