The United States has reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases since the disease broke out. On Friday, October 23, Johns Hopkins University reported nearly 83,000 new infections, surpassing all previous records.
The total number of deaths has exceeded 220 thousand. These figures illustrate the coronavirus situation is getting worse across the nation. Estimates recently published in the specialized journal Nature Medicine by the University of Washington indicate that by February 2021, the coronavirus pandemic will have caused half a million deaths in the United States. The government’s poor handling of the pandemic has made the situation much worse.
Although the United States is the worst-hit country in terms of coronavirus infections and fatalities, and the number of victims keeps rising, Trump continues to hold campaign rallies with no consideration for social distancing rules. This comes as authorities have warned that the worst is yet to come this winter.
On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration approved, under the emergency act, using the drug remdesivir to treat COVID-19, the first and only medication so far to receive federal approval for the coronavirus.
