KSA: Human Rights Council
Saudi Arabia is regarded as one of the worst human-rights abusers in the world. There is hardly a day in which a citizen's head is not cut off in public; in which a prince or a rival is not rounded up; in which a businessman's properties not confiscated; a rights activist not arrested, harassed, tortured, or executed. Freedom of expression is still a royal monopoly in the kingdom and criticizing the throne is a deadly sin. Public protests, political parties and labor unions are out of question. Yet, Saudi officials have an insatiable desire for having a seat in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), a body with the stated task of promoting and protecting all human rights around the globe.
