Hundreds of Catalan pro-independence protesters greeted Spain's king Friday as he attended an award ceremony in Barcelona. They chanted anti-monarchy slogans and held his picture upside down.
Organizers of the protest blame King Felipe VI for failing to condemn the police violence that marred the region's independence referendum in 2017. Catalonia's regional government and Barcelona's mayor boycotted the visit
A recent poll by the Center for Opinion Studies (CEO) shows confidence in the Spanish monarchy is at an all-time low in Catalonia amid an ongoing corruption scandal involving the former King. In his speech, partly delivered in the Catalan language, King Felipe called for unity and stability in battling the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Spanish king continues to stir strong resentment among members of Catalonia's independence movement. Friday's Royal visit could have been an opportunity for reconciliation. Instead, it seems to push both sides much further apart.
