Global coronavirus death toll now at over 962K

The new coronavirus has infected a total of more than 31.21 million people and killed 962,705​ across the world so far, according to one tally.

According to Reuters, infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the virus first emerged in China in December 2019.

China reports 6 new cases

China’s national health authority said on Tuesday that six new coronavirus cases had been recorded in the country on Monday, down from 12 a day earlier.

All of the new infections were imported from abroad and involved travelers.

China has registered 85,297 confirmed cases so far, with 4,634 deaths.

COVID-19 cases reach 274,158 in Germany

The number of confirmed infections in Germany rose by 1,821 to 274,158, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Tuesday.

The tally showed that 10 people also died of the COVID-19 respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus on Monday, bringing the total number to 9,396.

Czech Republic records 1,476 new cases

The Health Ministry of the Czech Republic said on Tuesday that 1,476 new coronavirus cases had been reported on Monday, up from 985 on Sunday, as tests done on the weekend were fewer than on weekdays.

Some 50,764 cases have been reported in the country of 10.7 million so far.

South Korea halts flu shots meant to ease burden on healthcare system

South Korea on Tuesday suspended free flu shots, which aimed to preemptively ease the load on a healthcare system already plagued by COVID-19, after reports of problems in storing some doses of the vaccine during transportation.

“I want to make it clear that the problem is not with the manufacturer’s vaccine production, rather it is an issue raised about the refrigerated temperature maintenance in the distribution process,” Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) chief Jeong Eun-kyeong told reporters.

South Korea has registered 23,106 COVID-19 cases and 388 deaths.

India’s cases slip to lowest in almost a month

On Tuesday, India reported the lowest daily increase in infections in almost a month.

Federal health data released on Tuesday showed that 75,083 new infections and 1,053 deaths had been recorded in the last 24 hours.

India has 5.6 million confirmed cases in total.

Brazil’s coronavirus death toll rises to 137,272

Brazil’s Health Ministry said on Monday that 13,439 additional confirmed cases of the coronavirus had been recorded in the past 24 hours.

Brazil has registered more than 4.5 million infections since the pandemic began.

According to the ministry, the number of fatalities increased to 137,272.

Cases surpass 700K in Mexico

The number of confirmed cases in Mexico jumped by 2,917 to 700,580, the country’s Health Ministry reported on Monday.

According to the ministry, the total death toll now stands at 73,697.

Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said that the actual number of infections in the country was significantly higher that the official figure.

But he said the number of infections had dropped over the past several months.

“We now have eight consecutive weeks of a falling (caseload),” Lopez-Gatell told reporters on Monday evening.

Some Australian states ease border restrictions

Some Australian states decided to ease border restrictions as the number of infections there dropped.

The northeastern state of Queensland would open its borders to parts of neighboring New South Wales (NSW), including the NSW tourist spot of Byron.

“These areas have a lot in common with Queensland. They usually do a lot of their business in Queensland. So, we believe that this is the right measure to take,” Queensland’s Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told reporters.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall also said the state would allow NSW residents to cross the border without self-isolating for 14 days starting from Thursday.

Meanwhile, the state of Victoria, the worst-hit by the coronavirus, reported 28 new cases on Tuesday, up from 11 on Monday.

Premier Daniel Andrews attributed the increase in the number of cases to increased tests done over the weekend.

There are about 27,000 infections and 851 deaths in Australia.

Iran records 3,341 new coronavirus cases

Iran’s Health Ministry spokeswoman said on Monday that the number of infections had increased by 3,341 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 425,481.

Sima Sadat Lari told state TV that 177 people had also died of COVID-19 during the same period, pushing the death toll to 24,478.
