Shortly before his controversial visit to the city of Kenosha, US President Donald Trump caused a stir with suspicions about an allegedly planned action against the recently held Republican nomination convention.
A plane was “completely loaded” “with gangsters who wore these dark uniforms, black uniforms with equipment and this and that,” said Trump in an interview with the broadcaster “Fox News” that was broadcast on Tuesday night. “A lot of people” were on the plane “to cause great damage”. Trump was not much more specific. Nor did he provide any evidence for his allegations. When asked where the alleged event took place, he declined to answer, citing that an investigation was ongoing.
Trump did not say which government agencies were investigating or what type of “equipment” it was. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) referred inquiries to the White House, which initially did not respond to the request for comment. The Ministry of Homeland Security initially did not comment either.
Trump was officially nominated as the Republican candidate for the presidential election in November at the party conference last week. The convention lasted four days. While the actual venue was in Charlotte, North Carolina, speakers were also added from other locations. Trump gave his central speech in the garden of the White House in Washington. It became clear that, as an advocate of law and order and an unconditional supporter of the police, he wanted to recommend himself to the voters and put the issue at the center of the election campaign. In this regard, he mainly refers to the riots that repeatedly occurred on the fringes of protests against racism and police violence and for which he blames left-wing extremists and the democrats.
Kenosha in the state of Wisconsin has become the most recent focus of the debate. There a white police officer shot the black family man Jacob Blake several times in the back and seriously injured him. As a result, there were protests for days. Two demonstrators were shot dead. Trump defended the alleged perpetrator. The 17-year-old probably only defended himself. The president plans to visit the city on Tuesday, despite the fact that the Democratic governor of Wisconsin and the mayor of Kenosha have openly opposed them. They fear that Trump's presence could only further heat the situation.
