Rescuers attempted to reach people trapped in remote villages in India's eastern Odisha state on Thursday after heavy flooding left thousands of people displaced.
The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) personnel used rafts to evacuate at least 7,000 people from several villages in Jajpur district of the state, after the floods inundated residential areas and swallowed large areas of land. Some villagers waded through floodwaters to reach safety.
Weather department officials have predicted heavy downpour for the next 24 hours in western districts of the state.
The rains support two-thirds of India's 1.3 billion population who live in rural areas and rely on farming. But excessive rains cause many problems such as floods, landslides and water-borne diseases.
