Turkey discovers natural gas reserves off Black sea

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country had discovered the largest natural gas reserve off the Black Sea.

According to him, the 320-billion-cubic-meter (11.3 trillion cubic feet) deep-sea reserve was found at a site Turkish vessels began exploring last month. Turkish drilling ship Fatih ship has been operating in the black sea over the past month.

If confirmed as recoverable resources, the reserves could lessen Turkey's dependence on energy imports, opening a new era for the country. Turkey is reliant on Russia for its energy. Turkey's drilling operation in the region. Turkey has put the country at loggerheads with Greece and other Mediterranean countries.

Last week Turkey resumed its exploration activities in eastern Mediterranean amid Greek objections and call from EU and NATO to ease the ongoing tension over the issue.

Observers say Turkey’s discovery of Natural gas will on the one the hand strengthen its economy and presence in the region but on the hand will surround it with regional tensions.
