This episode is a brief section of Aisha al-Adawiyas speech at the Muslim American Society and the Islamic Circle of North America 18th Annual Convention in Chicago in December 2019.
There is an incredible rich history in the United States of African Muslims that we still have not yet fully grasped and befitted from.
Aisha al-Adawiya says: I am tired of hearing Muslims say we dont feel that we belong here, Islam is new in this country, they dont like us it is an indication that we really have not dealt with the real history of our country.
And that becomes our responsibility now. She puts: One of the things that really hearts me to this day is we see so many images of starving children in Africa, we never brushed the subject of Africa as one of the richest if not the richest continent on the planet.
So, my question is why children in Africa are starving? Why are they suffering? Where are all the resources? These are taken from us, stolen from us and we dont realise that blood sweat and tears that went into making the foundational pieces that went to making United States through the free labour that was contributed by slave Africans and many of them who were Muslims.
