Iran and Afghanistan have launched a joint investigation into the death of Afghan immigrants in a border area.
Early this month allegations were made that Iranian forces beat and drowned dozens of Afghan migrants crossing into Iran illegally.
An Iranian delegation headed by the country’s deputy foreign minister visited Kabul to discuss the issue. The two neighbors stressed the importance of carrying out the probe.
Some have described the incident as an effort by common enemies to sow discord between the two nations which enjoy numerous commonalities.
Iranian border guard command has dismissed the allegations and denied any involvement in such an incident.
According to Iran’s Border Guard commanders the Hari river is far from the Iranian border guard posts and those who try to enter the country illegally, are always treated in a humane way under international human rights law.
During their meetings, the visiting Iranian delegation and Afghan officials also agreed to expand cooperation to end cross-border human trafficking.
