The pharmaceutical industry is valuable as it is a major source of medical innovation. It is also a heavily regulated industry. About 97 percent of drugs required domestically are produced in Iran. There is a small amount of drugs for specific ailments such as cancers and MS that Iran imports.
Also, there are over 120 pharmaceutical companies that produce medicine and 70 factories that produce raw pharmaceutical materials. Domestic productions saves Iran 550 million dollars annually. Medicine production capacity in Iran is nearly 5 times more than the domestic requirement. Iran exports pharmaceuticals to 40 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
