Facebook Inc. says it has removed some ads by President Donald Trump's re-election campaign promoting "the Official 2020 Congressional District Census".

This comes after the company has been criticized for allowing the Trump campaign to use the ads that began running on its platfrom on 3 March.

The ads, which asked users to fill out an "Official 2020 Congressional District Census," come from the pages of the Republican president and Vice President Mike Pence, linking to a survey on an official campaign website and then to a page that asks for donations.

"This survey is ESSENTIAL to our team's 2020 campaign strategy. We need Patriotic Americans like YOU to respond to this census, so we can develop a winning strategy for YOUR STATE," some of the ads read.

Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone said Thursday, "There are policies in place to prevent confusion around the official US census” adding, "This is an example of those being enforced."

Vanita Gupta of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights said the ads were "deceptive" and "unacceptable."

"If Trump says a fake census is 'official', people are going to think its official," added Gupta, president and CEO of the group which helped Facebook craft its policy on census interference.

Facebook has come under attack by Democrats too who criticized the company for its policy of not fact-checking ads run by politicians, a policy they also say benefits Trump.

Earlier in the day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slated Facebook for the same matter, saying they violated the comapnay's misleading content policy regarding the census.

"I'm particularly annoyed today the actions of Facebook," Pelosi said at a press conference, calling the advertisement "an absolute lie. A lie that is consistent with the misrepresentation policy of Facebook."
