Boris Johnson has successfully put his Brexit bill back to parliament, moving a step closer to securing Britain’s departure from the European Union and fulfilling his campaign pledge.

During the Queen’s speech and opening of parliament, the Prime Minister's plans were laid out to legislators ahead of the key vote on Friday. Friday’s vote on the withdrawal agreement passed by 358 votes to 234, and having already won over key former Labour heartland seats in the general election, gaining a majority in the commons.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he is determined to wrap up Brexit by Christmas, with the final stages of the bill set to be ratified in early 2020 ahead of the departure date at the end of January. Prior to Friday’s key vote, the Prime Minister promised to prioritise the NHS once Britain left the EU bloc.

The prime minister’s new parliamentary mandate means that the Brexit bill’s final readings in 2020 should pass easily, but also, that a no deal Brexit is still possible.

Changes to the previous bill mean that if ratified, the government could not permit extending the transition period beyond December 2020, and also that the UK could reconsider European Court of Justice rulings retained in the UK after Brexit.
