MCB says Tory party is 'institutionally' Islamophobic

The MCB's assistant secretary general, Miqdaad Versi (R), says Islamophobia is "endemic" and "institutional" amongst the Tories

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has accused the Tory party of “approaching Islamophobia with denial, dismissal and deceit”.

The MCB, an umbrella body representing hundreds of British mosques and Islamic associations, is regarded by some as the UK’s core Islamic institution.

The organization published a statement yesterday accusing Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, of having “a blind spot for this type of racism”.

“It is abundantly clear to many Muslims that the Conservative Party tolerate Islamophobia, allow it to fester in society, and fail to put in place the measures necessary to root out this type of racism”, the MCB statement added.

The MCB’s statement comes on the heels of a report by The Guardian on November 12, that twenty-five sitting and former Tory councilors have been exposed for posting Islamophobic and racist material on social media.

Meanwhile, in a new development, a Tory parliamentary candidate has said the PM should “unequivocally apologise” for his comments on “Muslim women”.

Parvez Akhtar, who is contesting the Luton south seat at the general election, claims there is “blatant discrimination” in the Conservative party toward “individuals” and in the “policy agenda”.

In an article for The Telegraph on August 05, 2018, Johnson wrote that Muslim women wearing burkas “look like letter boxes”.

Akhtar’s intervention from within the Tory party is likely to add pressure on the PM to take action against what is perceived to be widespread Islamophobia in the Tory party.
