Hundreds of Lebanese have staged a demonstration outside the US Embassy in Beirut to demand Washington stop its interference in the country’s political and economic affairs.

Protesters accused the US of invigorating and politicizing nationwide protests which have gripped Lebanon since October 17. They say the US has exploited the anti-government protests by pressuring political leaders into forming a new government that would satisfy the US and Israel.

The protests in Lebanon followed US diplomat Jeffrey Feltman’s testimony before the Congress. Feltman expressed the need for the US to stay present in the region to prohibit what he called the growing influence of Iran, Syria, China, and Russia in the Middle East.

Feltman also called on the Lebanese people to vote wisely in the next elections so that Hezbollah be stripped of its arsenal and its political role in the government.

Moreover, he urged the release of US military aid to allow for proper reform in Lebanon and guide the Lebanese Army. Such statements have infuriated the people as many protesters burned pictures of Feltman as well as US and Israeli flags.

Meanwhile, thousands of people continue to stage protests against corruption and the ruling elite in Lebanon. People are calling for the formation of a new government, economic reforms and the return of stolen public funds.

Since the start of the nationwide protests in Lebanon, the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has been adamant that it has clear and credible information that proves the US is attempting to destabilize the country. However, if the Lebanese stick together, experts believe Lebanon will not be dragged into strife.
