The United Kingdom has lowered the terror threat level from “severe” to “substantial” for the first time in five years.
The move comes in the wake of the killing late last month of Daesh leader, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, in Syria.
Britain suffered five terror attacks in 2017, three of which resulted in multiple fatalities.
Since August 2006 the UK has operated five terror threat levels; with Low indicating an attack is unlikely and Critical indicating an imminent attack. The three other threat levels in between are moderate, substantial and severe.
The terror threat level is set by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), a supposedly independent cross-departmental body which is housed inside the headquarters of the British security service, MI5.
Despite the lowering of the terror threat level, Sky News is reporting that MI5 and Counter-Terrorism Command (SO15) are currently focused on around 800 terrorism-related investigations across the UK.
