UEFA Super Cup: Liverpool beat Chelsea for title

Champions League winners Liverpool have won the UEFA Super Cup by defeating Europa League title-holders Chelsea 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 2-all following extra-time.

Chelsea took a deserved lead in Istanbul in the 36th minute when Olivier Giroud slipped home a defense-splitting through-ball under the keeper. Liverpool’s response came almost immediately after the break with Sadio Mane bundling the ball over the line from a few yards.

The Senegal international’s second of the night was much less scrappy and way more emphatic as he found the top corner in the 5th minute of extra-time.

Next, it was Chelsea’s turn to draw level with Jorginho coolly converting a penalty in the 101st minute after Liverpool’s keeper Adrian brought down Tammy Abraham. With the game locked at 2-apiece, shootouts beckoned, and both teams were flawless until Adrian made up for his earlier faux pass and saved Chelsea’s fifth penalty, taken by Abraham.
