Greek firefighters have battled a stubborn wildfire on the island of Evia, as heavy winds and high temperatures plague the island.

Several villages were preemptively evacuated and reinforcements were sent in from across the country, including firefighters, fire engines, planes and helicopters. No one was injured in the blaze, and there was no damage to houses.

The fire brigade had been unable to bring the fire, which started on Thursday, under control, as various fronts kept re-igniting on the lush hillsides. On Saturday, fire officials said they had managed to put out several fronts. Police said one man has been arrested in connection to the fire.

Temperatures have surpassed 40 degrees Celsius in the last days in the country, where fires are common during the summer months. In 2018, a fire killed 101 people in a coastal hamlet outside Athens.
