Enric Mas Nicolau overcame Miguel Angel Lopez in a sprint finish to win stage 20 of the Vuelta a Espana, while Britain's Simon Yates retained the leader's red jersey.
The young Spaniard finished the penultimate stage with a time of 2 hours, 59 minutes and 30 seconds to move up to second in the general classification above the Colombian rider Miguel Angel Lopez and stayed one minute and 46 seconds adrift of Yates.
The Brit cemented his place at the top of the standings. He will join Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas in conquering the sport's biggest races in 2018, after he completes Sunday's largely processional final stage which is a flat 101-kilometer ride with the finish line in Madrid.
