Boris Johnson Fanning the Flame to Islamophobia in the UK
To outline the effect of Former UK FM Johnson describing the Muslim women wearing burqa as letter boxes and bank robbers. On Islamophobia in the UK
canprovoking Islamophobia take a politician closer to being British Prime Minister? Former British foreign secretary Boris Johnson has been accused of encouraging Islamophobia to open his way to the top post in the ruling Conservative Party. The criticism arose after Johnson published an article in a national British newspaper, describing Muslim women wearing the burqa as looking like letter boxes and bank robbers. Labour MP David Lammy said Johnson, whom he called a pound-shop Donald Trump, was fanning the flames of Islamophobia to propel his grubby electoral ambitions.
In an article written for the Daily Telegraph, Johnson said he was against a ban by Denmark on the use of burqa and niqab, but he said the cloth was oppressive and women who wore it looked like letter boxes and bank robbers. But Naz Shah MP, Labours shadow equalities minister, said Johnson was deliberately attacking Muslim women to reach out to the far-right. Saying Muslim women look like letterboxes, comparing them to bank robbers and describing Islam as a problem was a calculated attack, Shah said.
It has been claimed that Mr Johnsons comments caused Muslim women to suffer attacks, with their burkas pulled off by. It has also been suggested that verbal attacks were directly linked to Johnsons provocative description in the article of women wearing the burqa. One such attack happened on August 8 in London, with two women targeted the next day in the capital. Other women have also experienced verbal abuse because of clothing associated with their religion.
