A Typically British Fudge Is Britain sleepwalking into an Orwellian society? Walk in a British city and ask a hundred people “what should Britain be proud of?”, and you might expect to encounter some recurring themes: democracy and freedom of speech. However, the facts on the ground prove otherwise as Britain is now ‘one of the worst-ranked countries in Western Europe in terms of respect for press freedom’. But the story doesn’t end here. While the British government tries to justify its attempts to hobble press freedom by innocent-sounding excuses such as data protection, defending privacy or protecting national security, the government has used such power to gag some news outside these categories.
