The family members of a slain Maltese reporter have appeared in court in a libel case against the deceased, a week after she was killed by a car bomb, as hundreds attend a mass for her.
The husband and the three sons of Daphne Caruana Galizia attended the hearing on Monday.
The case was brought by Malta’s Economy Minister Chris Cardona after the deceased alleged that the minister had been to a brothel in Germany while on government business this year.
Libel cases in Malta don’t automatically close after a person’s death and are passed on to heirs. Galizia’s family now risks a fine if they lose the case.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people attended a mass in Malta to honor the journalist a few hundred meters from where her rental car was blown up on October 16.
Caruana Galizia, who wrote in several Maltese publications and had many readers on her blog, had targeted politicians, local criminal organizations, businessmen, and other powerful figures. Many individuals had taken legal action against the investigative journalist, and dozens of lawsuits were pending when she was killed.
Two of her important investigative reports were about money laundering and illegal oil exports.
Although an autopsy was performed last week, the body of the 53-year-old journalist is still in the custody of authorities as part of the investigation into the car bombing. No funeral date has been announced.
