Iran claims title in Baku Pencak Silat Championship

The Iranian men's national pencak silat team has won the trophy at an international Pencak Silat tournament in Azerbaijan, having won twenty medals, including a dozen gold ones, at the sports event.

The Iranian squad stood on top of the podium with 15 gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

The Iranian pencak silat fighters were followed by representatives from the host country and Ukraine, who ranked second and third respectively.

The international Pencak Silat tournament in the Azerbaijani capital city of Baku started on August 23, and wrapped up on August 25.

The tournament reportedly brought together more than 250 athletes from Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

President of West Asian Pencak Silat Federation and Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Pencak Silat Committee, Homayoun Khorram, has hailed participation of the Iranian men's national pencak silat team in Baku tournament as a “great opportunity” for the squad prior to forthcoming Asian Pencak Silat Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Pencak silat is an umbrella term for a class of martial arts originating in Indonesia. It is a full-body fighting form incorporating strikes, grappling and throwing in addition to weaponry.
