Iranian midfielder Zare bids farewell to soccer playing career

Retired Iranian footballer Maziar Zare

Former player of the Iran men’s national football team and Azadegan League, which is also known as League 1 and serves as the second highest division of professional football in Iran, club Khooneh Be Khooneh, Maziar Zare, has brought down the curtains on his soccer-playing career at the age of 32.

The veteran right-footed defensive midfielder announced his retirement from the soccer world on Friday.

The retired Iranian footballer started his career in Malavan Bandar Anzali Football Club in 2004, and moved to red-clad Tehran-based giants Persepolis after four seasons.

Zare played in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League for the Perepolis.

He joined Ras al-Khaimah-based professional football club Emirates Club later on, but returned to Persepolis in 2010 after a disappointing season in the United Arab Emirates.

In June 2012, Zare moved back to Malavan along with former teammate Pejman Nouri. He joined Khooneh Be Khooneh Football Club in 2016, where he scored two goals in 23 appearances.

The retired Iranian footballer was a member of Iran national under-23 football team in the 2006 Asian Games. He was called up to join Iran men’s national football team in June 2007 for the West Asian Football Federation Championship 2007.

Zare was a member of the Iranian squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifying matches.

In July 2011, Zare was selected again to join the Iranian squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification.
