Six students die in Japan avalanche

Six Japanese high school students were found “with no vital signs” Monday after an avalanche on a mountain in Japan.

Local authorities and police confirmed that an avalanche had hit a ski resort in the town of Nasu, about 120 kilometers north of Tokyo, in Tochigi Prefecture early Monday.

Tochigi prefectural authorities said about 50 students from seven high schools had been on a mountaineering trip in the area.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that six high school students were subsequently found “with no vital signs,” terminology used by Japanese authorities when victims are yet to be officially confirmed dead with an autopsy.

NHK also said that three other students were injured, while three teachers on the excursion could not immediately be contacted.
