New Yorkers and tourists have tried to bid farewell to bad memories of 2016 with a symbolic gesture during an event called Good Riddance Day.

Inspired by a Latin American tradition, good riddance day includes throwing away objects that represent bad memories of the old year.

To that end, New Year’s revelers lined up in Times Square to get rid of the symbols, making room for the possibilities of the year 2017.

Some participants wrote their bad memories on a piece of paper, while others threw away photographs, bills and other items of discontent.

A massive shredder, giant trash bins and even a sledgehammer were provided for the contestants to destroy the sad moments that ranged from the US presidential election to bad personal traits.

The winner of the contest was a cancer survivor who said goodbye to her wig as a symbol of her overcoming the disease.
