Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The Syrian government forces have targeted terrorists’ positions in the province of Hama purging them from a strategic area. Terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda are still in control of parts of the province. The developments come ahead of the implementation of a nationwide ceasefire on Monday.

  • Hundreds of British activists have held a rally outside a detention center in Bedford County to demand its immediate closure. They expressed outrage at the detention of asylum seekers without charge or trial. The British government uses the center for detaining the refugees before their deportation.

  • US Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump says the description of his supporters by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton proves she is unfit for presidency. Clinton earlier called Trump backers a basket of deplorables. However she later regretted the remark and slammed Trump for racist rhetoric.

  • Palestinians have attended the funeral of 16-year-old Abdel-Rahman Al-Dabbagh who was shot dead by Israeli forces during a protest in the besieged Gaza Strip. The mourners condemned Tel Aviv’s crimes against the Palestinians. Israelis have killed at least 239 Palestinians since October 2015.

  • A Spanish ship, an Irish naval vessel and several humanitarian boats have rescued more than 2,000 refugees who were trying to reach Italy through the Mediterranean Sea. The Italian coastguard says women and children were among the refugees travelling on overloaded boats.

  • In Greece, thousands march on the streets of Thessaloniki to protest against more austerity measures by the government. The rally was held in the center of the city where Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was unveiling his government’s economic policies for the upcoming year.

  • Thousands of Spaniards have held a rally to voice support for a proposed ban on bullfighting in the country. The protesters have criticized the government’s move to sponsor the events as shameful. Since last year, at least 17 towns and cities have either cut funding for bullfighting or banned it.

  • Anti-refugee and anti-Islam protesters have staged a demonstration in Finland’s capital Helsinki. The protesters slammed the European Union’s refugee policies and demanded the deportation of Muslims from the country. Anti-refugee sentiments have grown significantly in Europe following the massive influx of asylum seekers in 2015.
