Jill Stein formally accepts US Green Party presidential nomination

Jill Stein, the Green Party’s US presidential nominee, appeared on Saturday at the party’s convention in Houston, Texas.

Jill Stein has officially accepted the Green Party nomination for US president at the party's convention amid wide voter discontent with both major-party candidates.

Addressing the Green Party National Convention on Saturday in Houston, Texas, Stein pledged to lay the groundwork for a larger movement to put an end to the two-party system.

"I'm honored beyond words to be your candidate, and I'm so honored to be running for president of the United States with the Green Party — the only party of, by and for the people," she said to the audience.

She has chosen Ajamu Baraka - a lifelong civil rights activist - as her running mate.

Stein insists she sees a viable path to victory that involves disillusioned Democrats and Republicans during a campaign noted for historic levels of discontent with both major-party candidates.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees, are both ranked among the most unpopular presidential candidates in America’s history.

During the convention speech, Stein also reached out to Senator Bernie Sanders’ supporters who felt disappointed by the Democratic Party’s bias for Clinton. Since Sanders’s defeat in the Democratic primary elections, Stein has made no secret of pursuing his voters.

“I want to recognize the people coming out of the Bernie Sanders campaign who helped launch a national movement and refused to let that movement die in the Democratic Party,” said Stein.

On Thursday, Scott McLarty, the Green Party’s media coordinator, warned of “election fraud” in the country, which it says includes unfair ballot access laws to prevent independent candidates from taking part in the election process.

Third-party candidates campaigning for the 2016 US presidential election are gaining more support among voters as Republican and Democratic nominees continue to struggle with their unparalleled unpopularity, polls show.

According to recent polling averages by RealClearPolitics, Stein has enjoyed a surge in support. She is now supported by about 4 percent of the voters, up from 2.5 percent in June.

The survey also shows a steady yet significant rise in support for Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee Gary Johnson, going from 4.5 percent to 8.4 percent over the past six weeks.
