Trump ahead of Clinton in three swing states: Poll
US presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has overtaken his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in three swing states, a new poll has found.
The Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll released Wednesday showed that the New York businessman is now ahead of Clinton in Florida (42-39 percent) and Pennsylvania (43-41 percent) in head to head match-ups.
Last month, Clinton led Trump 47-39 percent in Florida and 42-41 in Pennsylvania.
In Ohio, the two candidates were locked in a dead heat and the race was too close to call at 41-41 percent, said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. Last month, the candidates were tied at 40-40 percent.
The drop in Clinton’s support became more apparent when Green Party nominee Jill Stein and Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson were included as third-party candidates.
Trump led Clinton 41-36 percent in Florida, while 7 percent of the voters backed Johnson and 4 percent opted for Stein.
In Ohio, Trump topped the list at 37 percent and was followed by Clinton at 36 percent. Johnson again scored 7 percent while Stein gained 6 percent support.
In Pennsylvania, Trump led Clinton 40-34 percent while 9 percent chose Johnson and 3 percent picked Stein.
The result prompted panic among Clinton’s campaign staff, with her spokesman Brian Fallon calling Trump a “serious danger.”
“We know the battlegrounds are going to be close ‘til the end. That's why we need to keep working so hard. Trump is a serious danger, folks,” he tweeted.
With a nearly 30 percent Democratic electorate, Florida is at the center of attention for Clinton’s campaign strategists who expect a strong Democratic turnout in the state this November.
In the last presidential election, 35 percent of Democrats made up Florida’s state electorate.
According to Brown, while Clinton’s drop is not directly linked to her email case, “she has lost ground to Trump on questions which measure moral standards and honesty.”
Swing states are states where no major party or candidate has overwhelming support to guarantee its victory.
