Brexit backers widen lead over opponents in new UK poll

Brexit supporters hold a 10-point lead over their opponents, a new poll by the Independent shows.

More than half of British voters want their country to leave the European Union (EU), a new poll has found, less than two weeks before the matter is put up for vote this month.

The survey, released by the Independent on Friday, found that the “Leave” camp has managed to open up a 10-point lead over the rival “Remain” campaign, leading them 55 percent to 45 percent.

This marks the biggest lead the Brexit supporters have enjoyed since the British daily started its polling a year ago.

The poll also shows that the Remain camp has shrunk four percentage points since the last poll in April.

According to the Independent, the survey’s findings hint at the Leave movement’s growing momentum in the run-up to the June 23 referendum.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron and most of his cabinet members have been outspoken in opposing the Brexit option, while key figures inside the ruling Conservative Party have been promoting the EU exit.

Cameron says leaving the EU poses an economic risk to the country and can undermine Britain’s security.

This is while, former Mayor of London Boris Johnson claims that leaving the bloc will pave the way for the creation of nearly 300,000 new jobs.

Tory MPs Andrew Bridgen and Nadine Dorries say that the premier has effectively lost his parliamentary support after resorting to “lies” and “outrageous” claims in his bid to persuade British voters to back the Remain campaign.

Membership of the European Union has been a controversial issue in the UK since the country joined the then European Economic Community in 1973.

On the spectrum, Britons who favor withdrawal believe that outside the bloc, the UK would be better off in conducting its own trade negotiations, better able to control immigration and free from what they believe to be excessive EU regulations and bureaucracy.
