US Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders says if Republican candidates Donald Trump or Ted Cruz won the White House it would be an “unmitigated disaster” for the country.
“I think the idea of a Donald Trump or a Ted Cruz presidency would be an unmitigated disaster for this country,” Sanders said in an interview with Charlie Rose on CBS News on Friday.
“I will do everything in my power and work as hard as I can to make sure that that does not happen, and if Secretary Clinton is the nominee, I will certainly support her,” he added.
Sanders, who has raised the issue of Hillary Clinton being unqualified to run the country, softened his tone on Friday, saying his remarks that the Democratic frontrunner is “unqualified” for the job was a response to her recent attacks against him.
Sanders said he was just trying to defend himself. “All I am saying is that if people are going to attack us, if they’re going to distort our record as has been the case time and time again, we’re going to respond,” he said. “I’m responding to attacks being made against me.”
When asked if he actually thinks Clinton is not qualified to be president, Sanders responded by asking: “Well, does Secretary Clinton believe I am unqualified to be president?”
He did not back away from his earlier remarks, but did instead concede that Clinton is “extremely intelligent.”
In addition, the independent senator from Vermont on Friday also seemed to abandon his call for Clinton to apologize to the victims of the Iraq war, which she voted in favor of as a senator.
Sanders said he was countering her remarks that he should apologize to victims of the Sandy Hook shooting because of his record on gun laws.
“Of course she doesn’t bear responsibility,” Sanders said. “Do I hold her accountable? No.”
In March 2003, the United States and Britain invaded Iraq in blatant violation of international law and under the pretext of finding Weapons of Mass Destruction; but no such weapons were ever discovered in Iraq.
More than one million Iraqis were killed as the result of the US-led invasion, and subsequent occupation of the country, according to the California-based investigative organization Project Censored.
Sanders has long been critical of US foreign policy and was an early opponent of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Clinton, in contrast, is almost universally recognized as being far more hawkish and inclined to use military force.
