Russia says Iran’s recent ballistic missile tests do not violate a United Nations resolution adopted last July.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department for non-proliferation and arms control says UN Resolution 2231 does not ban the tests. The comment came in response to a report that the United States and its European allies are pushing for UN measures against Iran over the missile launches. The four countries claim the recent missiles tested by Iran are "inherently capable" of delivering nuclear weapons. But a similar US-led campaign against Iran failed earlier this month and UN diplomats say the case for any measure is weak. UN Resolution 2231 calls on Iran to refrain from launches related to ballistic missiles DESIGNED with the capability of delivering nuclear weapons. Iran argues its missiles are defensive and designed to carry conventional warheads only. Tehran says the recent nuclear deal with the P-5+1 is the best guarantee that the country will never develop nuclear weapons and therefore, the idea of making missiles capable of carrying nukes would be absurd.
